WEEK 1: Introduction to Sustainable Development

Assalamualaikum w.b.t and hello!

On 4th March 2025, we unfortunately did not have any physical or virtual class. However, our lecturer, Prof. Dr. Suhaimi, prepared a short Youtube video explaining the course outline, assessments, and the method of learning for this course. In the video, prof also introduced us to the basic concept of sustainability. Here are some of the insights I gained from our first lecture:

  1. Sustainable means able to maintain, and sustainable development refers to the development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
  2. The three basic concepts in sustainable measures are living with certain limits of the earth's capacity to maintain life; understanding the interconnections among the economy, society, and the environment; and maintaining a fair distribution of resources and opportunity for this generation and the next.
  3. The 5Ps:People, Planet, Prosperity, Peace, and Partnership represent the dimensions of the SDGs that are crucial for sustainable development, aiming to stimulate action over the next fifteen years.

Other than that, although we couldn't be together in the same class, prof initiated a taaruf session where we got to know each other. We were asked to briefly introduced ourselves and reflect how sustainable development relates to us personally. It was nice to know the different perspectives from everyone. Most of us come from different departments and background,  which naturally lead to diverse mindsets.

One student mentioned that sustainability is important for him because, growing up, he didn't get the same privileges as those living in urban areas. Hence, he is determined that sustainability can help promote justice and equality for his community. Some students related sustainability to Islam, which really changed my perspective on the topic. Previously, I believed that sustainability was important because the Earth is a shared gift for the mankind, and it is our job to ensure that it is being taken care of for the future generations. However, upon reading others' responses, I agree with the idea that we were born as a Khalifah in this dunya, hence it is our duty to protect the creation of Allah s.w.t and live a life that aligns with the concept of Rahmatan lil-'Alamin

It was definitely a short but insightful class for me!
