WEEK 9: Field Works - On Campus Observation

Assalamualaikum w.b.t. and hi!

Today, I learned about how IIUM functions as a sustainable campus. It is truly inspiring to see how IIUM emphasizes sustainable development in all aspects of university life.

Fun fact: IIUM is the first university in Malaysia to receive the prestigious International Green Gown Award!

While there is no single, fixed definition of a sustainable campus, each institution may shape its own vision, and there are six commonly accepted indicators of campus sustainability:

  1. Setting and infrastructure
  2. Energy and climate change
  3. Waste
  4. Water
  5. Transportation
  6. Education and research

Beyond just "going green," here are some impactful initiatives IIUM has undertaken to support sustainable development:

  • IIUM Mahabbah Food Bank
  • CFS Sejahtera Room
  • IIUM COVID-19 Relief Fund
  • Cat Shelter
  • Solar Panel Installations
  • IIUM Food Waste Composting Project
  • Recycling Stations
  • UNiRIDE Ecotour
  • myTREEvolution
  • IIUM World Clean-Up Day 2018
  • Humility Day 2018 – Mahallah Toilet Cleanliness and Caring Campaign

So, what simple actions can we, as students, take to contribute? Here are a few ideas:

  • Close the tap after wetting your toothbrush
  • Take shorter, wiser showers
  • Check faucets and pipes for leaks
  • Recycle regularly
  • Switch off fans and lights when not in use
  • Use digital tools like iPads or laptops instead of paper

All in all, we all share the responsibility to care for the Earth. Let us fulfill our amanah (trust) as caretakers of the environment.

As Allah s.w.t. reminds us in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 60:

“Eat and drink from the provision of Allah, and do not commit abuse on the earth, spreading corruption.”

May we be among those who honor this trust.

  1. Beautiful reminder! It’s true caring for the Earth is a shared responsibility that goes beyond just awareness. As Muslims, fulfilling our amanah as stewards of the environment is not just a duty, but an act of worship. May we all do our part, no matter how small, to protect and preserve the blessings Allah has entrusted to us.
